Since 2018, OpenAI has been releasing GPT language models, with GPT-3 being the most advanced model at the time of ChatGPT’s release in 2022. However, recent release of GPT-4 (March’ 23) is currently the latest and most powerful large language model from OpenAI. It’s important to note that if you’re currently using the free version of ChatGPT, you’ll still be interacting with the GPT-3 model, or GPT-3.5 to be precise. If you would like to understand the architecture of GPT-4 and business use cases, pls visit my other article @ What’s new in GPT-4: Architecture and Capabilities

The focus of this article is to provide a guide on accessing GPT-4, and it includes a detailed description of the steps involved.

If you want to use GPT-4 to generate text freely, you’ll need to subscribe to ChatGPT+. This is the premium version of ChatGPT that requires payment. Access to GPT-4 is not available through the free version of ChatGPT. However, there is an alternative method to access it which will be elaborated at the conclusion of this article.

Here’s how to subscribe using OpenAI ChatGPT+:

Go to OpenAI’s announcement page for GPT-4. It’s important to note that GPT-4 is only available through ChatGPT+ for paying members. If you have a premium account, you’ll be taken directly to ChatGPT. If you’re using a free membership, you’ll need to upgrade to ChatGPT+. You can do this by clicking on the “Upgrade to Plus” button in the left menu as shown below -

After you become a paying customer, you’ll be able to access GPT-4 through ChatGPT. When you start a new chat, you’ll see a pulldown that lets you choose between the old models or GPT-4.

If you’re already using ChatGPT, you may be prompted to switch to GPT-4. If you do, a text bar will be added to your chat with a message saying that the previous model is no longer available, and you’ve been switched to the latest default model. The outputs that use GPT-3 will have the old, green OpenAI logo, while GPT-4 outputs will have a new, black logo.
