We recently analyzed public agency content to better understand the types of posts from partner agencies that receive the most engagement on Nextdoor. We hope this information will help you better identify the kinds of topics that are most interesting to your residents.

Here are the top 5 types of content your agency should be sharing on Nextdoor:

#1. Urgent local incidents

As the trusted communication platform for the neighborhood, it’s not surprising that Nextdoor members want to receive information about what’s happening in their local areas. Missing persons, power outages, significant weather events, road closures— when emergencies occur that impact your neighborhoods, keep your residents informed!

#2. Celebratory/Feel Good stories

Building community means working together to improve quality of life— it also means celebrating when good things happen. This post from Officer Sandoval at the Phoenix Police Department is a great example of a public servant taking time to recognize a young person making a small but meaningful contribution to his community. When good things happen, let your residents know!

#3. Educational information

When the City of Fort Lauderdale launched their new online parking permit system, they turned to Nextdoor to make sure their residents had all of the information they needed to adapt to this change. Public Information Specialist Monique Damiano reported, “Because of Nextdoor, we were able to be very responsive and proactive, and provide a level of neighbor support that complimented the launch of this new program. Furthermore, by using Nextdoor, we were able to reduce incoming calls and emails to the Parking Customer Service team, freeing up staff to address other neighbor needs.”

Use Nextdoor to help educate your residents about new programs, ways to prevent crime, and local laws.

#4. Local updates

Is there a new business coming to your downtown? Are you making changes to your municipality’s street sweeping schedule? Your residents want to know!

#5. Requests for feedback/action

Many of your residents joined Nextdoor because they want to be involved in making their neighborhoods and cities better places to live. This makes Nextdoor a great tool for recruiting volunteers, inviting residents to attend your public meetings, and soliciting feedback from your citizens. Help your residents become more civically engaged by requesting their input and letting them know about local opportunities!
