Charles Goodyear was an American inventor born in 1800. He is best known for his work with rubber, which was initially unstable and prone to melting in hot weather and becoming brittle in the cold. Goodyear worked for many years to try and solve this problem, and in 1839, he discovered a process known as vulcanization.

Vulcanization involved heating rubber with sulfur, which made it more durable and elastic. This discovery revolutionized the rubber industry and paved the way for the creation of many products, including tires and waterproof clothing.

Despite his success, Goodyear faced financial struggles and spent much of his life in debt. He died in 1860, never fully profiting from his invention. However, his contribution to the rubber industry has had a lasting impact, and the company Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. was named in his honor.
