ODET 01 — “Perspective is Everything”
I am happy to unveil the first installment of my year-long side project, ODET. In the simplest of terms, it is an ode to the T-shirt and an open experiment in creative process.
Over the course of 2018 I will design twelve T-shirts, printing each by hand in limited edition runs, while sharing stories behind the designs and of the process of their making.
Now, for the first — “Perspective is Everything”.
Somewhere around 1994 I formed — in the loosest possible terms — a small, small business called Fine Print T-shirt Co. Because apparently I need to name things before I can actually set out and do them, Fine Print acted as an outlet for personal creativity using a medium that was both accessible to me and visible to others.
I designed “Perspective is Everything” as one of the first shirts under this fledgling DIY label. For years it has remained, for whatever reason, one of my favorite shirts I ever created. While I have never been prolific at anything, it reminds me of a time when I could create on a whim, where inspiration fed directly into a tangible work of art. It is a design that has, in a perhaps nostalgic sense, driven me to keep creating to this day.
So, today is the day. I have long wanted to replicate the design and breathe new life into it. Today I intend to do that, but also to use it as a springboard into a new routine of making. I am accepting my own challenge to make more, to be less precious with my work and to let inspiration play a larger role in my process as a whole.
