Mobile Apps For Charity

Our Top 5

I’m sure it hasn’t escaped your attention, but mobile phone use is endemic and on the rise.

72% of us in the UK own a smartphone, and we’re not afraid to use them.

Many charities have created mobile apps to keep up with the kids, using them to fundraise and raise awareness.

A great example of a successful and innovative charity app is Feedie, which I wrote about a while ago.

Today we’re going to look at a few more charity mobile apps of this kind, and see what we can learn from them and why they work.

Our Top 5 Charity Mobile Apps

1. Hero Bears

This is a really fun app created by the wonderful charity, Help for Heroes.

Help for Heroes provide support for wounded soldiers and their families in the UK.

Hero Bears is a rather addictive game that involves taking the role of a little bear soldier, carrying another injured bear on a stretcher, while trying to collect as many coins as possible.

Various celebrities (such as Jeremy Clarkson and Lorraine Kelly) will block your path as you go… and that shakes things up a bit!

For each app downloaded, £1 is donated to the charity. It’s a lot of fun, and for a great cause.

2. Charity Miles

Charity Miles is an awesome fundraising app that lets you raise money as you exercise.

For every mile you walk, run or cycle, Charity Miles will donate money to your chosen cause, as long as you share your workout on social media.

There are 9 organisations (all US-based for now) that you can donate to via the Charity Miles app. These include Stand up to Cancer, Feeding America and Autism Speaks.

3. My Life as a Refugee

This is a very clever little app that lets you put yourself in the shoes of somebody having to flee war or persecution in their own country.

It puts you in hypothetical situations where you must make life-changing decisions about how to survive, keep your family safe and begin a new life.

You select a character, and read the beautifully illustrated stories. As you read, the choices you make affect the outcome of your journey.

It’s a brilliant idea for spreading awareness about this very worthy cause.

4. VolunteerMatch

The web’s favourite volunteer network created this great app to make it easier to access their services on the go.

It’s a fantastic way for people to search VolunteerMatch’s enormous database of volunteer opportunities.

Volunteers will find you (and you them!) much more easily.

5. I Can Go Without

This app is simply inspired, and makes giving simple.

Basically, all you have to do is to go without your morning latte, or cycle to work, and the money you save can go directly to your chosen charity. The app is partnered with charities including Thirst Relief International, Oxfam Canada, and OneXOne. Watch their great animated video to find out more.
