Someone hold meš”š
Agbero-A term used to describe a Lagos Thug in Nigeria.
Believe me when I tell you my friends would have a hard time believing this.
Me!š
I wish to explain to you how big a deal this is. I would try my best.
In Lagos, Nigeria, Agberoās are known for intimidating individuals, they collect fees(ticket money) from motor park drivers. They also extort money from passerby's and traders. They are known for engaging in fights and sometimes have different scars on their body as evidence.
Personally, I noticed how good they are with calculations, quite impressive but I guess when dealing with money one has to be that good. I also noticed that they mostly sound the same way, correct me if iām wrong.
My first experience with them was on a bike, they took all the money we had in broad day lightššI was so angry on that day that I had to call my friend to vent. Then it happened the second time on a different road, that day wasnāt a picnic either.
On this day, I took the same road with my friend, I could see them from afar, they sighted us too and got ready to jump in the middle of the road. After forcefully stopping us, they proceeded to use intimidation to demand for money. I noticed my friend was speaking calmly to them while i remained quiet, like i did in the past.
I heard a knock, then another. āYou wan make we break the screen?,Emi yoo fį» iboju foonu rįŗ¹, i go break your phone screen oā, he was hitting the phones in my friendās pocket. Our phones!.
All I knew was that my mouth became open and i asked him why he kept hitting my phone,at this point there was a lot of back and forth which he included him insulting my parents and me daring him to break the phone so I could call the police. I could see my friend staring, speechless but I couldnāt be bothered at that point.
More of them arrived and gathered around us but I went on and on, I mean he couldnāt catch a break. Then I saw it, right there in his eyes, surprise mixed with fear. He immediately gave an explanation saying he didnāt know it was my phone but I wasnāt having it. This is what we call bad market. I knew he couldnāt beat me or do anything because it was daytime.
I sat there on the bike shouting at the top of my voice, the fear finally turned into frustration that he had to tell me to go with my wahala.
Wahala- A Nigerian Pidgin English word meaning ātroubleā
You see why this seems like a big deal? I never would have done that.
I got to my destination and started asking the Holy Spirit what happened.
My advise. Please do not try this as an experiment as it can be very dangerous, avoid any altercation with them and also avoid areas where they are mostly populated at night.
I repeat, do not try this as an experiment. Lol, I fit no even try am again.
