SCENE 9

INT. LIVING ROOM — DAY

TODD, 30s, watches a blustery storm though a large bank of windows.

Visible only from the waist up, the dismal day is no match for the pained look on his face.

Todd hears a door OPEN and CLOSE.

He slowly rolls backward.

Todd turns his electric wheelchair around and heads down a hallway. His right arm and hand have limited mobility, enough to operate the steering mechanism but that’s about all.

FOYER

Todd finds his mother, FAITH, with a large bag. She sets it down on a table and pulls out several bottles of acrylic paint.

Faith smiles, looks hopeful.

Todd turns away. Faith fights back tears.

GUEST ROOM/MAKESHIFT ARTIST STUDIO

Paintings Todd created before his accident adorn the walls.

Faith squeezes different colors of paint onto a palette. She sets up several brushes and places a canvas flat on a large table.

MOMENTS LATER

Faith pushes Todd into the room and places his wheelchair close to the table.

Faith dips a brush in dark blue paint and then holds it out to Todd. Angry, he knocks it away.

Faith selects another paintbrush and dips it in green.

Todd stares at the brush.

Faith places the brush in Todd’s right hand and helps him dab paint onto the canvas.

Their intertwined hands go back and forth a few times: from the palette to the canvas, palette to canvas. But then the paint brush slips and falls to the floor.

Todd attempts to move backward but Faith blocks him.

She picks up a third brush and dips it in yellow. She holds the end close to his mouth.

Todd looks up at her, eyes wide and questioning.

Faith nods.

Todd grips the brush with his teeth and adds yellow to the canvas.

Todd reaches for more paint. Faith moves the palette closer. Todd dips the brush in red and continues painting. He’s slow but maintains control.

Faith looks down at her son with pride. She steps back. Todd’s now so immersed in the process he doesn’t notice her leave.

HOURS LATER

Todd rolls away from a colorful abstract painting.
