Michael dropping in on a glassy wave in Huanchaco, Peru

Michael Meyer, a wide-smiling Californian with a (new) knack for lefts, not only plays tennis like a Williams but also advises Californian cities on financial strategy like a boss!

He tells us why he stole some time away from his adorable niece and nephew in San Diego last April to surf and get his work done remotely.

Why did you decide to go on Unleash Surf?

My friend introduced me to Unleash Surf. I had already spent the previous three years visiting Central America to explore the surf and culture but had been looking to get down to South America next. The ability to work remotely and hang with other like minded people from all around the world was a huge draw. …

Lucia in Huanchaco’s beginner surf area, La Curvita

Lucia Fernandez, an extraordinary creative mind and designer of spaces and beautiful places, is based in Seattle when she’s not adventuring or aunting to her fabulous nieces and nephews. She joined us for Unleash Surf last April to get some big creative work done on a long-standing project and begin exploring more ways to live and work remotely. Here’s her tips for taking some bold, but chill, steps on a new adventure.

Alice at the beach in Huanchaco

The first time I looked at Alice Driver’s website I cried. Her journalism and photography show heart-wrenching truths of women’s lives that are often overlooked or forgotten. She’s written and/or photographed for Longreads, Time, National Geographic, Outside Magazine, the New York Times, the Guardian and done segments for CNN — mostly focused on migration. In 2017, she was invited by the Nobel Women’s Initiative to join Nobel Laureates, including Rigoberta Menchú as they travelled Central America to highlight the work of human rights activists in indigenous communities.

Alice and her bestie joined us for a month of Unleash in 2019 to take a pause, get some work done and surf. Alice is as elegant, unwavering and kind as is her writing. …

Remote-working powerhouse couple Nick and Manuela joined us for a month of Unleash Surf to learn to surf, play and get their work done. We asked them about their travel-work superpowers, life-philosophy and hot-tips for soon-to-be Unleashers.

Working on beginner technique with Unleash Surf participant Tien in Huanchaco’s Curvita

Unleash’s surf coach Javier Larco, is one of Peru’s best surfers and coaches. He grew up in Huanchaco and Las Delicias, and has spent the last twenty years dominating contests throughout Northern Peru — ranking in the top twelve surfers nationally from 2003–2017.

His surfing skill is matched by his talent for coaching; he is a former national Junior coach for Peru, trained in biometrics, an ISA certified judge and has long run a surf coaching business in Las Delicias.

He’s loved by Unleashers for his calm and precise feedback, his depth of understanding of human movement and his ability to make everyone feel comfortable and confident in the water. He’s got an instinct for adapting to individual learning styles, knows how to accelerate each person’s progress and make it stick. …

Crowds at Marcahuamachuco

Each season Unleashers go to Peru’s most awe-inspiring pre-Incan fort, Marcahuamachuco, nestled 12000 feet up in the Andean foothills. This place is pure magic; misty green mountains, baby llamas, steaming hot-springs, astoundingly tall hats, wood-fired bread, and the best damn hot chocolate going. All the majesty and wonder of Machu Picchu and Cusco with zero other tourists.

Two years ago I took my first surf class and I immediately fell in love. From the first wave I knew that, even more than dancing, surfing would be my next improvisation teacher.

Last March I made the decision to travel to a small town in Peru to really learn to surf without compromising work time.

While on Unleash Surf a remote-work and surf experience in Peru I met Natalie Small from Groundswell. In the very male-dominated world of surfing, this organization aims to get more women and girls comfortable in the water. …

You know those people who seem to have it all figured out? Unleash Surf participants Gwendolyn Briscoe and Stefan Gehrig blew us away with their expert balance of a successful start-up, a loving relationship and time for adventure.

These Aussies live life like they mean it. Here’s their secret for awesome-sauce and a regret-free lifestyle:

What made you decide to become digital nomads?

Gwen: When Stefan saw the advertisement for Unleash Surf he was so taken with the idea of living in a new environment and being able surf everyday and work that he decided to offer me a position in his business that allowed me to travel and work remotely too. It wasn’t an easy decision for me as I’d had a great position as a Sales Manager for a large OHS Consultancy Agency for 11 years and but I thought, “why not work and travel at the same time?”. …

Huanchaco, the 5,000-year-old birthplace of surfing is possibly Peru’s most charming and archaeologically significant coastal towns. Arrive on a Sunday to the bustle of ceviche restaurants, fruit-ice treat sellers, sweet potato donut carts, (picarones) and seaside selfie-takers, but show up any other day of the week and you’ll find a laid-back village with uber-consistent waves, a centuries-old sustainable fishery, wholesome eats and a lifetime of discoveries for history nerds. Don’t be surprised if the layers of Huanchaco’s character entice you to stay for weeks longer than planned.

The most fantastic humans come on Unleash Surf. Here’s one of our faves: Cody Feda — the cabin-in-the-woods-dwelling software developer who decided it was time to learn to surf (and learn to shred he did).
