I would suggest for further reading: primatologist Richard Wrangham’s Demonic Males, which catalogues not just patriarchy, but violence-driven patriarchy behind the social structures of our closest primate relatives: chimps, orangutans, gorillas. (Lone exception is bonoboes. And while baboon communities feature female-headed family structures, they are driven by male decision-making and male violence.)
