The uneducated and blinkered “moralists” of our era fail to understand that lowest-common-denominator participation was never the normal definition of “democracy” but was in fact shunned by classical thinkers as rule-of-the-mob — a highly undesirable thing. Nor did they prefer oligarchy, but rather than either, they advocated democracy as rule by middle-sized stake-holders/yeoman farmers, people whose interests were in stability, security of the City-State, justice, exchange of views to prevent tyranny, fair-dealing.
