I completely concur! I’ve been in similar straits at times in my life, when it has become necessary to reevaluate a choice that “seemed right at the time” — and perhaps even was. However human beings are not static creatures. We are beings of constant change. What once fit may fit no longer, whether the change was gradual or sudden. Either way, it requires action on our part to make a new choice more aligned with our current desires and purposes.
What I’ve found helpful in those times to assuage my inner people pleasing honor student is the business concept of “opportunity cost”. What is the cost of NOT changing? In your case, you say it was three years that you could have been happy in your work. For many of us our bodies or our spirits will seem to conspire “against” us. I put against in quotes because my belief is we are always being nudged/pushed/drawn to the direction of our highest good, yet it can be hard to recognize it when it doesn’t look the way we expected. For example, if we never rest our bodies, our bodies will make sure we rest, even if it has to make us sick to do so.
