This head-in-the-sand faux naivete is a much bigger reason for the rise of the alt right than “oops we let the vampires in.” Lawmakers in NC weren’t nobly trying to halt (nonexistent) voter fraud, innocently infringing on the rights of African American voters in the process. They requested voting data broken down by race and wrote the law to specifically target heavily-black voting habits, such as early voting, explicitly to disenfranchise black voters in the state. So let’s not pretend any honorable purpose drives such initiatives. This alt right business is merely the GOP’s chickens come home, at last, to roost.
