Check-in Desk Design Considerations
Airport desks are designed according to three factors, which are, the number of customers to be served, the size of the airport, and aesthetics for a nice view. For a single airline airport, the airport desk design is certainly rigid. That means, putting a fixed signage named according to the airline in use of the facility.
For multiple airlines
Airport desks for multiple airlines are specially designed to be flexible and accommodate future changes. The signage which marks the opening and the check in close times is changeable. This feature is pressing when the airport is small and having different airline utilizing the same facility. The same check-in desks are utilized by multiple airlines by simply changing the signage to signify the name of the airline taking boarding passengers at the moment. A good check-in desk signage should be put and easily removable.
Aesthetics
The looks and the beauty of airport desks is a very important eye catcher. Passengers always get to wait here for a time long enough to start judging the beauty of the airport. The color may not be a bright, but aptly attractive and meaningful. Nonetheless, besides the aesthetics, the position of the desks matters too. The passengers need to have a face to face interaction with the person serving them. The check-in desk space must accommodate this interaction.
The check in desk queue and alternatives
For huge airports, sometimes people get crowded during check-in times. There is a fixed check-in time that has to be adhered to. However, there are three other methods that are being adopted to service the same purpose the check-in desks do, but with better convenience and time management. One can opt for mobile check in, kiosk check-in or web-based check-in. These are self check in facilities that serve thousands of customers at a time. Unlike check-in desks, self check in gives people the option to choose a seat and meal way before boarding. However, this is not a total escape from the check-in desks. The physically challenged or special needs people may have to use only the check in desk for some airlines. Secondly, even after utilizing the self check-in, you need to hand over the baggage at the check-desks, and also print an original boarding pass.
