Female medical doctor in Portugal (1878–19119)

Carolina Beatriz Angelo was the first medical doctor, doing surgery and a defender of the women rights.

The last king of Portugal, Charles, was murdered in October 1910 and the Portuguese Republic was implanted. The first elections took place in 1911. Caroline could vote because was a widow with a child. The Portuguese Constitution rapidly change this item, because of the use of women rights. She was the only woman who vote.

The women vote only was possible in 1974, after the Carnation Revolution in April, with the fall of the fascist Govern of Salazar.

Carolina worked doing surgery in the best Hospital in Lisbon at the time, S. José Hospital. She was a defender during her life of the women rights.

In 1906 Carolina became a member of “La Paix et le Disarmament par les Femmes”. In 1907, with Ana Castro Osório, a poetess, founded the “The Portuguese Group of Feminist Studies” and both became Freemasons.

With 33 years old, Caroline Beatriz Angelo died suddenly. Her name exists in the toponimia of streets of Portuguese cities and, in 2014, her name was done to a General Hospital in Lisbon.
