What is Buffer?

A buffer solution is an aqueous solution consisting of a mixture of a weak acid and its conjugate base, or vice versa. After the addition of a small amount of strong acid or base, Its pH changes very little and thus it is used to prevent changes in the pH of a solution. Buffer solutions are used to maintain a constant pH in a wide variety of chemical applications. One example of a buffer solution found in nature is blood. Human blood contains a buffer of carbonic acid (H2CO3) and bicarbonate anion (HCO3-) to maintain blood pH between 7.35 and 7.45, as a value higher than 7.8 or lower than 6.8 can lead to death.
