The beta value can measure a coins volatility in relation to that of the market. For stock investors the beta value[1] of a portfolio is an important measure of risk, a value above 1 means the investment is more volatile than the market, a value lower than 1 is less volatile. It can be helpful to do a beta analysis for your portfolio to see how returns match up against the beta and spot real winners (low beta, high returns). Here are some popular altcoins and their beta values for the last 60 days ending Oct 9, 2017. The coins were chosen by market cap, enough available data and an existing community. Since most altcoins are still sold and bought using Bitcoin (BTC), its price will be the market, giving BTC a beta of 1.

Here are the results.

Beta value compared to return

Highest returns

Coins with a high return for this period
Daily price changes

Coins with low beta and high return

Coins with negative returns

daily price changes

Interesting things:

  • ETH has a beta of 0.99
  • MCO has the highest return and highest beta
  • A lot of coins have a high beta on negative returns
