Why and How I Meditate

As our lives have become predominantly focused on material things and we increasingly become hedonistic as a society, the chaos in our minds become chattier and louder.

Am I good looking enough? Am I making enough money? Why does he/she have a better house? How can I make myself happier?

How can one calm this storm in our minds and focus on important things and people in our lives?

One word: MEDITATE

Meditate not on what you should or shouldn’t be but meditate to be in the present and shed the yesterday’s burden. The hurt that someone caused you but did they really? Maybe they were just protecting themselves.

Meditate on your emotions and reactions not how to control them or why does it bother you. It helps builds empathy because you see everything from a third person’s perspective.

Meditate and practice acceptance.

We are one irrespective of our skin color, the way we speak and all the insecurities we keep.

Meditate to become one with this universe, to unleash our full potential. When we are harmonious, we are happy, people around us are happy and we build better communities. We raise happier kids.

Some of the ways I meditate:

Soundscapes: An escape to the wild and nature while you work. This is the most used tool in my toolbox whenever I am at work. It helps me to cancel out the outside noise while I can focus on my work especially if I am writing something. You guessed it right, I was listening to some soundscape music while I was writing this.

Bowl Meditation: This is usually a go-to tool if I cannot go for my walks or I did not have enough alone time in the morning. I love it. To me, it’s my RESET. I forgive and heal easier and quicker with this. The vibrations of a singing bowl can balance dissonant frequencies and bring them back to harmony.

Guided Meditation: I often use guided meditation lying in the bed at night. It’s the best way to fall asleep and I wake up feeling refreshed and super early in the morning which gives me time for myself and my self-care which is usually meditation, yoga and/or some body-weight exercises.

Music: Music is very powerful. Just like I use soundscapes for work, I listen to different kinds of music according to how I am feeling that day or moment. For example, if I am homesick, missing my family or just sad I listening to a lot of old Hindi/ Bollywood songs. Dance numbers if I need some exercise and need to disperse some built up energy and/or emotions.

Walks: I love my walks around the block with my dog but a walk in the woods is the best time spent outdoors for me. I like being in the water too but being in the woods relaxes me and I get some exercise at the same time. If my dog and the whole family walks together, we walk meditate together and I feel we are always more in sync after that. It’s very important for my relationships.

Chanting “OM”: Another powerful meditative technique of mine which works much like the singing bowl is chanting “OM”. It calms my brain chaos, makes me breathe deeper and I feel much calmer. I encourage my son to do it with me. It definitely helps to clear my sinus and to breathe better. Just like a singing bowl, chanting “OM” helps you heal and produces positive vibrations.

If you use any other techniques that have helped you immensely please let me know. I would be happy to meditate with anyone if you are interested.
