Don’t waste time reinventing common UI patterns or paradigms unless they are at least 2x better

I don’t agree. We have common UI patterns that have been endorsed by thought leaders like Google’s Material Design and yet shown several usability problems (think the Hamburger menu and Floating Action Button). We need to question UI patterns before following them, and reinventing them if they prove to be detrimental to our design.
Also, it’s only after “wasting time” testing UI patterns that one can ensure they’re 2x better, right? What’s 2x, anyway?
