HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE : A MUST READ

I earlier had a challenge with the librarian of our school’s library that I will read hundred year of solitude in 7 days . I won but also loved reading the book . It shows the development of Colombia through a fictional village of Macondo

The story starts with Jose Arcadio Buendia with his wife Ursula Iguaran and a few friends establish the village of Macondo . His son’s Jose Arcadio ran away with the gypsies and later returned as a sailor and Aureliano became a liberal colonel and fought the Conservatives .They also had a daughter named Amantara .They later adopt a young girl named Rebecca whose parent‘s were Bunedia family’s relatives .She later married Jose Arcadio .the family grows and the novel ends with Aureliano Babiliano(who was Jose Arcadio ‘s great great great great grandson) blown away with whole of Macondo in a hurricane.

The major theme is the reality and magic co-existing in the the novel. For example the magic carpet was brought by the gypsies at the same time as ice . And Melquiades was able to write the Bunedia prophesy which turned out to be correct. But the most major theme of A Hundred Year of Solitude is Solitude. The solitude of the town is representative of the colonial period in Latin American history, where outposts and colonies were, for all intents and purposes, not interconnected.Isolated from the rest of the world, the Buendías grow to be increasingly solitary and selfish. With every member of the family living only for him or her self, the Buendías become representative of the aristocratic, land-owning elite Latin America .That is why the Buendías family line ended in a hurricane .

The book has a great literature with a secret message .The characters are beautifully described. But the best part is the time fluidity as the novel gracefully come from 1800’s to 1900's.From Jose Arcadio Bunedia to Aureliano Babiliano. So please give this a try. I am sure you ‘ll love it.I sign off with a quote
