Horror, Superstition, and Folklore Cast a Mesmerizing Spell on Prime Time Television

Family dramas featuring belan brandishing saas and cowering bahus on GEC channels have become the thing of the past. The audience craves something new and exciting that would set their mundane life on edge for at least half an hour of their daily lives.
The television shows that presently rule the TRPs serve the adventure the viewers hunger for on a golden platter. Some serials like Ishq ka Rang Safed, Sasural Simar Ka, Nagin, and Qubool hai do in small bites while others like Kala Teeka, Dar sabko lagta hai, and Fear Files, offer an entire gourmet of folklore, horror, and superstition. It has become the popular maxim of almost all the live Hindi TV channels.
Set along the holy banks of Banaras, Ishq ka rang safed gives a sensitive insight into widow remarriage and the hardships the widows still face in the name of customs and traditions.

Kaala Teeka on Zee TV channel is the latest offering of a story steeped in superstition where an abandoned baby girl is chosen as a shadow for a wealthy Man’s daughter as a protection from a family curse.

Nagin, another new show on Colors TV is about a woman who is an ichchadari nagin. The protagonist is out for seeking the revenge from the prince.

Zee TV’s Fear Files is programmed on real paranormal experiences and provides a gripping, blood-curdling narration of mystifying images in a documentary format. &TV’s brand new show, 26 episode mini-series, Darr Sabko Lagta Hai is an episodic depiction of real life horror stories.

Such is the pull of spooky elements among the viewers that even family dramas like Sasural Simar ka and Qubool hai have incorporated nagins, daayans, black magic, and vampires into their latest tracks to lure viewers.
Presently in Sasural Simar ka, an epic battle between evil and good takes place in the jungle at the centre of a sindur circle to ward of the evil Badi amma.

In Qubool hai, Afreen uses black magic to locate a key, which she later gives to Armaan and prompts him to use it. He is shocked to find out that Khan Begum is his mother.

Weaving supernatural elements into the stories have kept the audience intrigued and give a huge bump up in the show’s TRP ratings.
