Historical Background

The name “Gandhara” finds its origins in the region’s strategic geography. Situated at the crossroads of major trade routes, it linked India with Central Asia, China, and the Mediterranean. In the 4th century B.C., Alexander the Great took control of this area, and following him, the Indo-Greek rulers brought in classical influences that became a significant element of Gandhara’s artistic style for the subsequent seven centuries.
