“Is it really such a surprise that these ignored, marginalised people are now taking one of their few opportunities to get their message across?” Except that this was anything but. Messrs Johnson and Farage made it look like an opportunity to stick a double finger to the happy few, but there is no denying that the vote dealt with a very specific subject, namely whether the UK ought to stay in the EU or not. My point is that a country with such a clear pretence to lead (and not follow) the world would unite to face a question of such obvious national interest rejecting the spin and the lies trumpeted by Brexit leaders, and leave the score-settling for later. This has clearly not happened. Blame the politicians only, if you want, but passing the bucket is seldom the right way to begin a process by which a national identity in tatters can be restored.
