CROWNED KING OF BUDGET PHONES 2019.

Is It Really Worth The Hype? All you need to know…

LAUNCH DATE

The amazing Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 was launched in 3 different phases/versions.

The Chinese version which was launched 15th January, 2019. The Note 7 and Note 7 Pro version which was released in India 28th February, 2019 and the Global version which was released in India as well on the 6th of March, 2019.

Note: This review was done in respect to the Redmi Note 7 Global Version.

WHAT IS IN THE REDMI NOTE 7 BOX?

Straight out of the box, you get the Redmi Note 7 device itself, a USB-C type cable and a MI 5V 2A power adapter.

It is not considered a fast charge type power brick but from usage we can confirm that the charge speed is pretty much fast.

You also get a transparent silicon rubber type case to protect the phone. Included is also a SIM slot eject pin and the User Manual.

It is important to note that the Redmi Note 7 does not come packed with a earpiece.

REDMI NOTE 7 DESIGN

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 comes in three different colour variants, namely:

  • The Sapphire Blue/Purple Gradient type
  • The Gradient Ruby Red type
  • The Pure Onyx Black variant

The Redmi Note 7 has a very sleek premium design, protected with reflective Corning Gorilla glass 5 both front and back which makes the phone weight slightly heavier that it’s mates.

Weight : 186grams

Thickness: 8.1mm

Height: 159.2mm

It has a rain drop notch screen design centered at the top middle occupying the 13MP front Camera and a screen to body ratio of 81.21%.

At the back, its body houses a fingerprint scanner centered near the top and also the dual camera/flash infrastructure vertically aligned at the top left corner.

At the top of the phone, you get the 3mm earphone jack and the IR sensor.

At the bottom, you get MIC receiver, the USB-C port and the Speaker respectively and also a small dot indicator right blow the screen.

At the right side, you get the volume UP/DOWN buttons and also the Power Button right under it.

The design is pretty awesome and have a very premium feel to it. It is also very regular that you would most often mistake the front for the back when you pull it out of the pocket without looking at it. I give it a 4 star rating.

REDMI NOTE 7 OS/UI

The Redmi Note 7 comes powered with the MIUI 10 UI built on ANDROID 9 Pie OS.

Some reviews might not really hype it due to preference but to be honest, it is one of the sleekest UI i have seen on smartphones.

Even way better than the Samsung One UI.

We can’t over emphasise it’s cool features.

It would be easy to operate for someone coming from the IOS background as it as so many things in common. Some might find it complex but for the fact that almost every thing is customizable is a big plus.

The 2 dominant materials used for the body is Glass and Plastic.

  • Resolution — 1080 x 2340 px (Full HD+)

This device has a very very cool display and it is also very bright and usable under the sun. However, you might get some little screen reflections under the sun but I can confirm that it’s not distracting.

Sound

It’s uses “Smart PA”.

The sounds you get from this phone is very clear and loud. Compared to Umgidi F1, Samsung A50, Huawei Y7 prime and other Phones within this budget, the Redmi Note 7 has the best sound.

Even though the speaker is facing down, the sound is quite well spread.

It comes powered with Snapdragon 660 which is massive for this price range. With Antutu performance grade of 150.

  • 64 bits

GPU

Adreni 512

Ram

3gb/4gb LPDDR4X RAM

The performance of this system is very much impressive. After using of 2 weeks I haven’t experienced any lag whatsoever.

It plays graphics intensive games seemlessly. Games like PUBG, Asphalt e.t.c

The app loading is quite impressive too as it launches apps almost without loading (thank to its AI preload). The navigations is pretty seemless too.

Storage

32gb/64gb eMMC 5.1 Storage

Slots

1 SIM space + Hybrid space for second SIM or SD Card.

Security

  • Fingerprint Sensor at the back

The sensor is protected and scratch-proof which makes it more durable and it is pretty fast. It works well even with wet fingers.

  • Facial Recognition (works like charm)

Tip: For best performance, set facial recog in low light or by evening.

To access Facia Recog, go to settings and search “Face”

Below are some of the photos taken with the Redmi Note 7

Cool, right?….

Battery

  • 4000 mAh Li-Polymer
  • Fast Charging 5V2A
  • USB-C and USB-on-the-go

I can tell from usage that the phone charges pretty fast and on a normal daily usage, the battery lasts well over a day on full charge.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Gestures : Cool New way to Navigate

Gestures are major addition to MIUI 10. There are lot of new gestures, which makes Navigation simpler. Most of these gestures are very iOS-ish, but still it makes your life simpler. Though all Xiaomi phones have Physical navigation buttons, you may not need them, if you get used to these Gestures.

AI APPS PRELOAD

Another AI feature of MIUI 10 is AI Preload. AI preload uses machine learning to learn your app usage pattern. It learns which apps you use regularly and which apps you use rarely. So it can predict which apps you might open next.

So, it preloads the apps which you are going to open, beforehand. So when you open an app, there is no need to load it.

This significantly reduces the load time of apps and sometimes also makes it possible to launch an app in almost Zero time.

Mi Home devices support

In MIUI 9, there was a Mi Home manager to control only Mi branded smart home devices like Mi Air Purifier. But in the new MIUI 10, Xiaomi added support for a wide range of Smart home device brands.

Xiaomi says its new Smart Home manger supports 590 different Smart home brands. Which means you can control all your Smart home devices from one place instead of installing a separate app for each different-brand device.

I have personally tried this on a projector and a Samsung TV, works pretty fine.

System-wide Picture in Picture (PIP) Mode

A Picture-in-Picture mode is that you can view Videos or Maps or other apps in the Small floating window while using the other apps at same time. (Mind you, I’m not talking about split screen).

There is already Picture in picture mode within Mi Browser since a long time in MIUI 8 and MIUI 9. But you could only use it for Videos played through Mi Browser. It doesn’t work with other apps. Later Google added PIP to Android Oreo 8.0. But wasn’t added in later versions of MIUI 9.

Finally, now in MIUI 10, you can use a full-fledged PIP mode with other apps too. Now you can still view Maps while texting on WhatsApp or watch video while still checking your Mail.

AI Portraits : Better Bokeh Effect even with Single Camera

Smart Phones with Dual-cameras usually offer a special mode called Portrait mode. What portrait mode does is it blurs out the background and gives bokeh effect (blurred background) similar to a DSLR camera.

But here the dual-cameras are required, one to capture the person photo and the 2nd one to separate the background from foreground.

But, with MIUI 10 AI Portrait mode, you can take photos with bokeh effect even with a Single camera.

MI Sound Enhancement Via Earphone

With this feature, you can now literally buy any kind of headset/earset and make it sound like any that you desire by choosing from a wide range of headset options.

IR Blaster for Controlling Appliances

Night Mode Camera

TESTS PASSED:

  • Water Splash and Phone Wash test
  • Scratch Test
  • Phone Drop Test
  • Shower Test
  • Load Test
  • Screen Hammering Test
  • Fire Test (Front and Back)
  • Camera and Fingerprint scratch test
  • Ice Test
  • And of course, Space Test.

Is the Redmi Note 7 worth Buying?

The answer is a straight YES. All of the features you are getting are premium-like and worth far more than the price.

It’s a go for!
