Why does the scale on the left ($) increase dramatically after $1000?

Yeah, Fischer discusses this choice in his original post — it’s a log scale, designed to display an exponential relationship in the form of a linear relationship. (Pretty sure I’ve got that right.) The point is just to make the trend easier to see at a glance. You’re exactly right, there’s a hockey stick here, we’re just seeing it from a different angle.
