Day 157 — The Hemingway.

Day 157 — Salutations this Sunday. I thought I would jump right into the project today. A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of enjoying a very delicious cocktail, “The Hemingway.” Yes, Ernest Hemingway had a formidable love for alcohol. No, his favorite drink was not a mojito. You can read more tidbits about Hemingway lore here on Eater. One of Hemingway’s favorite drinks was a daiquiri at the Floridita. The daiquiri is a sweet and sour mix of grapefruit juice and rum. It was said that Hemingway would kick back six of these delicious drinks in one afternoon. What do you say we shake up a frosty glass to usher in the summer? In order to add a bit more citrus and a little more jazz, the original recipe below has been updated. If you would like to read about the traditional recipe and more information about Hemingway, go to “Post Prohibition.” If you would rather just dive in, below is the recipe to make this luscious drink.

The Hemingway Daiquiri

  • 2 oz white rum (Brugal Especial Extra Dry)
  • 1 1/2 oz fresh grapefruit juice
  • 1/2 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 oz grenadine
  • 1/2 oz quince shrub syrup
  • Garnish with a grapefruit twist

Shake all ingredients except the garnish and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with grapefruit twist.

I’m going to kick back, read a good novel and enjoy the afternoon. How about you? Either way, I hope your cocktail turns out better than Santiago’s eighty-four days of fishing! See you tomorrow barkeep.
