The “Epic” Reaction Button
Facebook recently released a shiny new rainbow of reaction icons to complement the universally adored like button. These wonderfully human animations are there to lend a hand, heart, laugh, yay!, wow, tear and angry SMH when a simple thumbs up just won’t cut it. This is a big deal, folks.
But, what about situations of truly epic proportions? What if you find yourself on the edge of a life-changing precipice and are unable to effectively express your excitement? Cue the epic reaction button.

Which got me thinking…
What defines epic?
Epic is a precipice. We strive for it, hustle hard for it, and hold it in our mind’s eye as the ultimate North star leading to success and personal fulfillment. Achieving epic boils down to a combination of utopian occurrences and ingredients worthy of a Michelin star restaurant. This utopia paired with a large serving of hard work and sheer passion create new standards for the future.

Aim for Epic
Attending Epicurrence, the Montues would be an epic win worthy of the use of their entire new collection of positive reaction icons. Facebook is kindly giving away 6 all-inclusive passes to attend this epic event. I immediately jumped (literally, jumped) at the opportunity to throw my hat into the ring.
I could write a novel describing my boundless enthusiasm about attending this conference, but Medium as a platform is widely regarded for the notion of quality over quantity, so I’ll be brief.
In the grand scheme of things, attending this conference would be an epic win for me, my company, and the Toronto design community at large. Bringing back fresh perspectives that will shape future events, collaborations, and not to mention my career as a designer would mean the world to me. I see myself as a vessel to help bring this community closer together, and attending Epicurrence would be the best possible education to make that happen.

The Green Cherry
In my (short) career as a designer, I’ve learned that precipice moments only come around every now and then. Call it women’s intuition, but I’ve had an epic gut feeling about every big decision I’ve ever made in my life.
From choosing a career in graphic design, to learning to code, to pivoting into UX design and finding a studio that focused on user research, to jumping out of my chair when first hearing about the possibility of attending this conference… these are the utopian ingredients in the recipe for epic. Epicurrence is the maraschino cherry on top (except in this case, the cherry is HEX #00C775).
