The IDM process in Holacracy is mostly applied in the realm of governance decisions, which means in some approximation: decision regarding the creation, deletion or amendment of organization roles, policies and accountabilities.
Proposals are tension driven (where by tension we mean a perception that there is a gap between the current reality and a potential future), in order for a proposal to be valid you have to basically describe a tension which is relevant to one of the roles you fill in the organization, and then come up with an example in which you experienced the tension and explain the way in which the proposal would have addressed that example, therofre reducing the tension.
Not all proposal follow the full duration of the process, some get discarded on the way, some get accepted because they do not raise any objection. The duration of the process is directly proportional to the following factors:
- Number of participants in the organization unit (called a “circle” in Holacracy) showing up at the meeting
- number of presented and valid proposals
- Quantity of clarifying questions asked
- Duration of each member reaction
- Number of objections raised
- Number of objections that need to be integrated
