When Celebrities Have Brushes With Drugs
In recent times, a lot of celebrities have come out in public to share their battle with drug addiction, proving that they are not untouched by such behavioral issues. Whether it is a shoplifting or driving under the influence (DUI) of drugs and alcohol, such vices can tarnish their image considerably. Often, famous personalities who are caught experimenting with alcohol and drugs relate this negative attribute to curiosity, temptation, depression, relief from pain, etc.
The prevalent stigma and strong public condemnation of addiction, especially when it comes to celebrities, have led to a situation where people involved in drug abuse are often ostracized from the society and are also forced to live in disgrace. This biased approach prevalent in the society has a drastic impact on the treatment and recovery from addiction.
Legends and their fall
On May 29, 2017, ace golfer Tiger Woods was found dozing while behind the wheel. He was apparently in an inebriated state and a video footage clearly showed that he was in no position to either speak or walk. He was reportedly unclear about his whereabouts as well, and told the cops he was in California, while he was actually in the vicinity of his Jupiter Island home in Florida.
Later, the golfing legend informed the law enforcement that he had taken Xanax and Vicodin the previous night. He was arrested on DUI charge. The latest development can have a severe impact on his custody agreement with his former wife, who had previously said that she would pull the “plugs” on their earlier agreement if Woods did not stay sober.
Woods is not new to drug rehab. In 2010, he had undergone a rehab treatment for his addiction to Vicodin and Ambien. It is believed that his drug woes are related to his nagging back pain that has put a full stop to his career.
American actress and singer Lindsay Lohan also suffered multiple relapses and was subsequently asked by the court to attend a rehab. Apart from the allegations like drunken and reckless driving, shoplifting, etc., the Mean Girls star had been accused of displaying misdemeanors that resulted in her 90 days at a “locked-in” drug rehab facility in 2013.
Lohan’s tryst with rehabs began in January 2007, when she first checked in for a 30-day rehab treatment. In addition to attending rehabs and spending a substantial time there, Lindsay had to wear a monitoring bracelet, a homing device worn by defendants or people under house arrest or parole. However, when she finally committed to come clean and participate in all the counseling sessions, she managed to escape the vicious cycle of drug abuse and relapse.
Recovery and rehabilitation
Drug addiction is treatable, provided one seeks an early treatment and is dedicated to the objective of achieving sobriety. However, there is no fast road to recovery. It should rather be a time-bound process. The road to recovery usually begins with detoxification, which is coupled with various therapies, community services and counseling sessions in order to escape from the clutches of addiction.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), “medication is an important element of treatment for many patients, especially when combined with counseling and other behavioral therapies.” If you or a loved one is addicted to illegal drugs, contact the California Drug Addiction Helpline to know about various California drug rehab centers that offer holistic programs for complete care and recovery.
