How I lost 40lbs by browsing Reddit

A story of how the most addictive site on the internets got me in shape.

I’ve been on the chubby side most of my life. I blamed it on genetics most of the time, but the truth is I didn’t eat right. Too much fast food under the “I deserve it” category.

Diets where tried, counting calories enforced and cardio done for the past few years with mixed results. In the end: back to bad eating habits and still chubby.

I have an addiction to reddit, I browse it every night before I go to bed for one or two hours. One of those nights I sumbled upon /r/keto and /r/loseit. I was baffled and mesmerized at how people lost copious amounts of weight and looked so good and healthy.

I read for days and days on how to eat right on those two subreddits which eventually led me to reading the book Why we get fat and what to do about it (go read it now if you’re struggling with weight). I learned about how sugar and carbs in excess will actually help your body make fat and keep it stored.

It was around this time that me and my wife found out we were pregnant with our first (yay), so it was time to act. I didn’t want to be borderline obese when my son was born.

So I started eating right, more veggies, more protein and more fat. Kept my carbs in check under 20g a day and cut out all sugars and alcohol from my diet. It was a hard first couple of weeks, I’m not going to lie, but after two or three weeks habit kicks in. They say that’s all it takes for your mind and body to build a habit.

I was happy, I felt more energized and feeling better about myself by the day. Four months later, 38 lbs gone. I went from 192 to 154 lbs. Un-freakin-believable.

Bought a few clothes a long the way, but had to get a whole new wardrobe after all the pounds where shed. From size XL/L shirt to S (they even fit loose now). From size 36 pants to 30. A whole new me.

Now your mileage may vary, but my motivations where both my son, my health and feeling good about myself (I despised looking at pictures of me on facebook — even went as far as to untag myself).

The end result? I’m a happy camper. I wear what I want and I feel confident and energized. I’ve also been biking for the past few months, and feel great!

Obligatory before/after pics.

If you are struggling to lose weight I urge you to browse those two subreddits, get inspired and informed. You will never look back.
