What you’re addressing here has been called the “values-action gap” — a specifically human form of weirdness where we claim to value something, yet fail to act upon those values.

This behavior has plagued environmental activism for years, and has recently become an area of study.

There’s also the neuroscience that shows us that we’re hard-wired for fight-flight-or freeze, none of which serve us in our current situation.

An interesting observation to emerge is that dystopic, extinction, and “end-of-the-world” narratives lead to feelings of guilt and paralysis, rather than action — so are basically self-defeating.

And yes, we need to begin fully imagining those empathic, alternate, sustainable and regenerative futures.
