Ozark is a show on Netflix that stars Jason Bateman. My first blog post is going to be centered around my thoughts of the first episode, which had me hooked on the show instantly. The show centers around a big sticky situation in which a guy (Jason Bateman) also known as Marty Byrd in the show, is a big shot money launderer for a drug cartel. The thing is, Marty’s family does not know about his second life beyond his daily job as a financial adviser. Long story short, Marty’s partner, who he is also best friends with, has been skimming money from all the years of laundering money, therefor getting them into a tad bit of trouble with their boss. The show does an excellent job of setting up the story line as to why the future parts of the show occur. I do not want to give the rest of it away, however, I highly recommend this show to anyone who likes a suspenseful, “on the edge of your seat”, kind of show. Along with the troubles with his boss, Marty is having issues at home with his wife and family. Many hard truths are revealed early on in the show to keep the viewer interested in it. The real thing that keeps the suspense going on in the show is that Marty has to make very impulsive decisions to keep him and well as his family alive, as they deal with very abrupt life changes. The events strip Marty’s kids away from their suburban Chicago lifestyle and really effects their mental health. As far as popular culture, this show is a good example of what happens when people live separate lives that remain hidden. Today personally, I see a lot of dishonesty and cheating. This show exemplifies the effects of betrayal and broken hearts on families. Most families can learn and even relate to this show, hopefully not with the same life threatening scenario as Marty Byrd, but the struggles of raising a healthy and happy family.
