Today, the Big Data for Migration Alliance (BD4M) is releasing the report, “Designing Data Collaboratives to Better Understand Human Mobility and Migration in West Africa,” providing findings from a first-of-its-kind rapid co-design and prototyping workshop, or “Studio.” The first BD4M Studio convened over 40 stakeholders in government, international organizations, research, civil society, and the public sector to develop concrete strategies for initiating and implementing cross- sectoral data partnerships, or “data collaboratives,” to facilitate ethical and secure access to data for migration-related policymaking and research in West Africa.

Public Beta of the Data Responsibility Journey Mapping Tool

Data Collaboratives, the purpose-driven reuse of data in the public interest, have demonstrated their ability to unlock the societal value of siloed data and create real-world impacts. Data collaboration has been key in generating new insights and action in areas like public health, education, crisis response, and economic development, to name a few. Designing and deploying a data collaborative, however, is a complex undertaking, subject to risks of misuse of data as well as missed use of data that could have provided public value if used effectively and responsibly.

Today, The…

Developing a Data Reuse Strategy for Public Problems, a Data Stewards Academy executive education course, is now accepting applicants for its second cohort of learners. The course helps data stewards — responsible data leaders in the public and private sector — develop a data re-use strategy to solve public problems. Noting the ways data resources can inform their day-to-day and strategic decision-making, we teach participants ways they can use data to improve how they operate and pursue goals in the public’s interests. By working differently — using agile methods and data analytics — public sector and private sector leaders can…

On the occasion of its first anniversary, the Open Data Policy Lab, an initiative from the GovLab with support from Microsoft, launched new course materials to support data stewards in developing a data reuse strategy for solving public problems.

The new self-directed learning program was adapted from a selective executive education course (currently accepting applications until Friday, May 21st). Noting the ways data resources can inform their day-to-day and strategic decision-making, the course provides learners with ways they can use data to improve how they operate and pursue goals in the public’s interests. …

Data is not a thing but a journey. Numerous decisions, methods and actions along the way shape the outcome and impact of using data. Taken together they determine whether we are #DoingDataRight — a core goal of COVIDaction. To help those decision makers using data to tackle COVID-9, The GovLab is building an interactive tool to map risks and responsibilities across the data life cycle and nudge and guide responsible decision making along the journey: “The Data Responsibility Journey Mapping tool”. Migration has risen as one of the most challenging issues confronting policy makers around the world. The growing complexity of internal and cross-border human mobility has highlighted the need for accurate, timely, and reliable information to develop migration policy — a need that traditional data sources are often not well-suited to meet.

In 2018, IOM’s Global Migration Data Analysis Centre (GMDAC) — in cooperation with the EU Commission Knowledge Centre on Migration and Demography (KCMD) and the GovLab at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering — launched the Big Data for Migration Alliance (BD4M) to harness the potential…
