I think this is a very important point, and I certainly agree with it. I don’t believe the relationship to work is the same for people in other parts of the world.

Perhaps a better way to put it is that people want to feel useful.

In my opinion, usefulness does not only come from doing work. Though this seems to be the prevalent thought in North America — that is, you are not (or cannot be) useful unless you are working.
