There are a LOT of people — and this group is very disproportionately white — who cannot reconcile the ugly racial realities of US history with the fantasies they and we, collectively, want to believe in. The contortions they go thru to deny those realities then become part of the record they’re trying to deny. It’s really sad, sad business for all of us.
