Capone & Fame

Capone put a lot of stock in his celebrity. In a passage from I, Capone, he has just been released from Terminal Island and is heartened to find the world has not forgotten him.

“You think I’m making this up? Maybe you don’t know when I got out, they run a cartoon of some Nazi showing Hitler the headline “Capone Freed,” and Hitler saying, “Sign him up.” And that was in a limey paper! A Baltimore paper even predicted how after the war Italy weren’t gonna be known as the home of Michelangelo and Dante no more, but Al Capone! I tell you, it give me a real boost knowing I was still world famous.”
