Hi Caitlin,

I love your work and read every article that comes to me. There is a point however that I would take issue with — one that you mentioned in your article causes you some grief.

Propaganda, PR, hypnosis, ‘brainwashing’, even ‘fake news’, cultural imperatives.… they’re overrated. They don’t work without the active consent of the recipient. They may not be consciously aware of it, but deep within every human being knows exactly what is going on. Exactly.

And though you may want to let them (and us in Oz) off the hook, the fact is we want cheap gas, cheap clothes, cheap junkfood and cheap hardware, and if the US military is the enforcement wing that facilitates this outcome, then we’re for it.

Otherwise, why would Assange be rotting in isolation? We just don’t care because he’s trying to spoil the party…. the orgy of consumption of garbage that we’re wallowing in like Orwell’s pigs.

Oh yes, we know all right, but we don’t have the will to do anything about OUR demand that creates the supply that you so incisively document.
