Mountaintop Moments: Why not live on the mountaintop?

We all have mountaintop moments. Moments that we will never be able to explain to someone else no matter what we do. Moments so vivid, beautiful and clear that it seems unlikely that life could get better.
When you are in that moment — time stops. The universe has locked gears with you and the synchronicity is palpable. These moments, for many, are passing and fleeting. But what if I were to suggest that it could be a permanent state? You’d probably think I were crazy. That’s where you’re wrong.
Challenges, Obstacles and Mistakes can be Mountaintop Revelations
The practice of treating our challenges and obstacles as Mountaintop Moments is essential for those who seek to sync themselves with the universe. By doing so, you see the joys and the problems as opportunities for happiness, growth and connection to others. We are not created and hardwired to be stagnant, complacent creatures. Our natural state is flux and change. When we accept that and are welcome to the challenges along side the triumphs, we inherit a spirit of richness, joy and, in many ways, deliverance. Deliverance into the Kingdom. I’m not talking about another place or time, I’m talking about here, right here inside you. I want to share a short story with you.
The Creator created the earth and humans and told Creation that he wanted to hide something from the humans. That is until they were ready to know about it. The “it” was that they create their own reality. The eagle told the Creator to give it to him and he would take it to the moon for humans to find it but the Creator refused and told him one day they would find it there. The salmon told the Creator to give it to him and he would take it to the ocean floor and bury it so that the humans could not find it. The Creator replied that they would find it there also. So the buffalo said I will bury it on the great plains. The Creator then replied that they would dig into the ground to find it there as well. Grandmother mole, who could not see physical things, but sees into the spiritual realm told the Creator to put “it” inside the humans. And so the Creator did that.
~ A story of Native American Origin
This story illustrates a deep realization that within me I have the Kingdom of God. Again, I’m not talking about some independent, all powerful God that rules everything. I’m talking about the god who lives inside of me, who created me in its image and who is within me at all times. I can see some of you rolling your eyes at me saying “who is he to think he is God?” You didn’t read it correctly. I am not saying I am God, I am saying God is within me and within each one of us, inside every tree, brook, star and galaxy. As much as saying a mother or father is within their daughter. It even has scriptural basis.
Nor will people say, “Look! Here! or, See, there!” For behold, the kingdom of God is within you and among you. Luke 17:21
Coupling these stories together creates a powerful understanding as to my (and all humanity) life’s calling and direction. If God is within me then I shall seek it out. I will learn about myself, value myself and love myself so I can best serve those around me. This is a take on an earlier post about the golden rule where I proposed that we read it as the “Golden Law.” We can’t love others until we love ourselves — similarly, we can’t love God until we love ourselves because God is within us. So how do we find God within us? Well — that, I’m afraid, has no clear answer. We each take a different path towards understanding ourselves. I don’t think anyone has devised a surefire way to unlock the God within. People, gurus, priests and life-coaches can point towards certain avenues of discovery but ultimately, it will only be those who dare to look in the darkest of places, who face their disgraceful, hurtful pasts, who take out their abusive childhoods, face their addictions, confront their demons and wake up to the joy and wonder which is God and the universe all around. If we were to take that to heart, literally, we would stop abusing ourselves, others and the environment without hesitation. It would be like someone who has smoked for 70 years and one day deciding they’ve had enough and stopped (I know someone who did this!). I don’t care how much someone hurts you or hates you, they have God within them — they just don’t understand it. But if you do, if you can see their pain and understand that it is the universe trying to wake them up, then maybe, maybe we can help set them free. Jesus said,
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs in the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:3
Did it ever occur to you that this might mean our pain and suffering is the pathway to God, to the kingdom of Heaven within us? Mountaintop Revelation right there. Bring it home now and make it happen. This isn’t an easy process — just like it takes a lot of effort, focus, training and determination to climb a mountain. We have all the tools within us to reveal God’s kingdom right here, today. And remember — by God’s Kingdom, I mean happiness, fulfillment, clarity and most of all LOVE.
