In July 2004, Motorola released a phone called the Razr, which was incredibly popular and saw many iterations over the years. At the time of it’s release, it was the slimmest phone on the market and it stood out easily as a “fashion” product.

The Razr V3i (2005)

Of course, today, companies like Apple and Samsung dominate the mobile smartphone market, but in recent years we’ve seen a new category of mobile devices that are foldable (in the sense that the screen is foldable). Towards the end of 2019, Motorola revealed it’s first foldable smartphone, the Motorola Razr, which is reminiscent by it’s infamous predecessor from all those years ago.

Given this is a relatively new category, this isn’t likely to be a widely purchased phone because some of the technology is new and this phone also comes with $1,500 price tag. If you’re an early adopter though, you’ve either already purchased this or might be very interested. If so, you’re definitely going to want to protect your fairly expensive investment.

Fortunately, Evutec has come through with the S-Series Karbon case specifically for the new Motorola Razr. Unfortunately, I don’t have a Razr to test this case on, but i’ll share my impressions of the case itself so you can make an better-informed decision if you’re in the market for this type of case.

Initial Impressions

This case uses what Evutec calls “Aramid Fiber,” which is more commonly known as Kevlar. I’ve reviewed other Evutec cases that use this material so there’s a familiarity to it. Kevlar is known for being 5 times as strong as steel at the same weight and is commonly used in body armor and other applications.

Unlike most cases we are familiar with today, the S-Series Karbon case comes in two parts to accommodate the Motorola Razr’s foldable nature. At only 0.7mm thick, this case is incredibly light which means you wont be adding very much bulk to your device. One part attached to the bottom half of the phone and wraps around the chin of the phone and the other part attaches to the top half which is also “front” of the phone when it’s folded shut.

The finish is very smooth on the interior and exterior of the case which feels nice and is likely to be gentle on the phone itself. Each part of the case also has two rubberized strips that likely provide additional grip between the case and the phone. These are covered with a plastic strip out of the box to be removed before attaching to the phone. These in addition to the slight lip on each side of the case should keep it securely attached to the phone.

Considerations

If you’re buying the new Motorola Razr then you’re probably very comfortable taking risks on new technology. Due to the design of the phone, there’s no way to protect the hinge so this will always be a vulnerable area of the phone in the case of a drop.

The Bottom Line

From what i’ve seen of Evutec’s case lineup, they’ve figured out how to make high quality cases. Having used several of their cases, including a Karbon case for iPhone 10, this is a very promising case that I would trust to protect the Motorola Razr as much as such a phone can be protected. It’ll be interesting to see how this new category evolves over time. Regardless, I have no doubt that Evutec will continue to rise to the challenge of designing cases that protect these investments.

Are you an early adopter of the new Motorola Razr or other foldable phones? I’d love to hear your direct impressions.
