  • Accountability — are you actually doing what you said you would?
  • Social Pressure — If you mess up lots of people need to find out!
  • Stakes — If you mess up you need to have serious repercussions. Put something at stake.

If you don’t have these aspects set up in your new habit formation system — then you are planning to fail. Plain and simple. A good system includes fail-safes so you do not have to rely on willpower — because as science shows us we have a limited amount to use each day!

So where does Snapchat come in? (I hear you saying)

I used to be a night owl with no hope of waking before noon. I decided to change this. Let me show you exactly how I began the habit of waking up at 6:00 AM every morning using the app.

I told one of my good friends to watch out for my snap whenever he ended up waking up. It should show me awake and moving at no later than 6:15 AM. I would do this by taking a video of myself brushing my teeth with the “current time” filter activated.

The result looked something like this…

So… Tired…

Accountability achieved!

So now to tackle creating social pressure (because our brains are wired to respond to this), and some sort of additional stakes.

Next I told my buddy that if he did not get some sort of proof from me via Snapchat any given day for the next month — then I would allow him to take a video of him slapping me in the face, and then he was to put it on his Snapchat story (we have tons of mutual friends). The thought of all my friends seeing me look like such a pussy made me cringe.

Social pressure achieved!

And lastly if I failed to send the proof, even for one day, I had to not only be publicly humiliated by my best friend, but I also had to pay him $20 for doing it. The monetary penalty was the icing on the cake.

Stakes achieved!

Needless to say I woke up at 6:00 AM everyday — and this is a habit that continues still. Now it ranges from 6:00 AM — 8:00 AM, but I have come a long way from sleeping in until noon everyday!
