Success is like an Iceberg!

The team recently delivered on a large-scale recruitment project for a significant infrastructure launch and the results were outstanding! Both internal and external teams did a great job and we celebrated the completion of the project with an awards evening to say THANK YOU to the team!

Whilst everyone got to see the great accolades & feedback, amazing statistics and a highly motivated team in action, which ultimately won awards, what they didn’t see was all the hard work, pain & persistence that went into the delivery of the project. There was meticulous preparation, long hours & weekends worked, the near misses, the expenses and of course all the rejections. We also had to manage any under performing team members, meet daily targets & goals and had to be constantly looking round corners to make sure nothing was missed. Despite the long hours and challenges we faced, and through sheer determination, organisation and pro-activeness, we met all the goals and targets and in the end all the extra effort the team put in was worth it to ensure the project was a success.

So, what made the project succeed? Predominantly, it was the amazing team we had. We also partnered with some very supportive stakeholders who were clear with their communication and objectives. And the internal project team worked hard, planned, communicated and directed the project.

However, it was the team on the ground that deserve the most praise. They were energetic, responsive and worked in small efficient groups to deliver the opening of a new infrastructure project that has changed the lives for commuters in Sydney’s Northwest — and that was the overarching objective!

And what did we learn? That building a community is important, the team was a ‘true team’ in the sense that they worked collaboratively together, looked out for each other and were proud to be part of the project. We also had a very clear goal, which gave the team a sense of purpose and direction. And finally, we made it fun and always said thank you. We gave out daily stars to the team which at the end of the project identified who the high performers on the team were.

In conclusion, if you can weave purpose, satisfaction and joy into what you do, then you will always put yourself in a strong position to succeed.
