Pain: A Back Story
Rachel Eve Stein

My husband has horrible pain from his leukemia. His fingers clench up tight and he says even his ear lobes hurt. This is due to the meds that are controlling his white blood cell count. Before his diagnosis, this man never even had an advil. He hates pills, so he would wait too long, and inevitably end up in the ER. When you have chronic illness and a screwy immune system, you seem to get a backstage pass and they just take you in. He’s learned to deal with the pain before it gets unmanageable at last. Now we seem to know the difference between an emergency and pain as a shitty side effect. All this to say I am so sorry you had to deal with this. I hope it never ever comes back.
