Mental Illness & Homelessness

Gale Holland with the LA Times does really great work covering issues of poverty and homelessness. In her most recent article, Gale interviews three experts on mental illness and homelessness…an issue I’m asked about a lot. In LA County, we estimate about 30% of people experiencing homeless also experience mental illness — significantly higher than the national homelessness figures. Gale’s interviews reveal a lot of the basic issues around the two interconnected issues, and most importantly why we should invest in permanent supportive housing as opposed to the costs of warehousing people who are ill on the streets.
