Call it the rider’s paradox

I always assumed that people who rode motorcycles did so despite the increased likelihood they could die suddenly and violently in a crash.

But then I was riding through a busy intersection this week and an ambulance was heading the other direction and the thought occurred to me that maybe we ride motorcycles because of the increased likelihood we could die suddenly and violently in a crash. I don’t mean that’s the main reason, and I am not saying riders are suicidal, but maybe we just like having that card in the deck. We have no intention of drawing the card, but we like to know it’s in there, you know? Call it the rider’s paradox.

“Life is short,” says the cliche. But life isn’t short. Life goes on and on and fucking on. A motorcycle helps take the edge off.
