In this fast-paced, tech-infused world, getting caught up in the hype surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) is easy. The potential of AI within the K-12 landscape is undeniable. But as technology leaders, we also understand that true, impactful AI implementation is not a sprint; it’s a marathon.

There’s no magic AI tool that will instantly overhaul education. Each school and district has unique needs, cultures, and existing technological infrastructure. Expect a period of experimentation — some tools will resonate, others might fall short. This is a perfectly normal part of the marathon. It’s about finding the AI solutions that genuinely align with your long-term goals.

When we think about all of the educational disruptors throughout history, it wasn’t so much about the technology, but rather focusing on fundamentals of change management. The foundational principle in change management is that when we change something, there is a loss. As technology leaders in education we must be mindful of that loss and approach a new and emerging technology with empathy and care.

This morning, during a conversation with a colleague at the EdTech Teacher AI Summit, I conveyed the sentiment that the incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) into schools should not be approached as a sprint solely focused on quantitative metrics. Instead, it should be undertaken as a sustained and deliberate effort, akin to the manner in which previous disruptive technologies have been integrated into educational systems over generations.

As technology leaders, we possess a wealth of experience in both the technology and education sectors. Over the past two decades, we have witnessed numerous disruptive advancements, such as the widespread adoption of one-to-one computing devices, the ubiquity of social media, and the expansion of network connectivity, which have significantly influenced pedagogical approaches and the roles of technology leaders in schools. As such, it is imperative that we actively engage in these discussions to ensure that educational institutions remain at the forefront of technological innovation.

The successful implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) is predicated upon the empowerment of educators and support staff. It is insufficient to simply introduce novel AI tools and anticipate extraordinary outcomes. In this regard, the adoption of a marathon mindset becomes imperative:

  • Professional Development: Prioritize ongoing, well-structured training that focuses on both technical skills and the pedagogical use of AI.
  • Cultivate Collaboration: Facilitate collaborative learning sessions for educators to share AI experiences, best practices, and challenges.
  • Quality Control: Develop a comprehensive framework for assessing current AI tools and guiding future AI acquisitions.

Pace Yourself: The K-12 AI Marathon

Technology leaders have the opportunity to set a responsible, sustainable pace in this AI marathon. Remember:

  • Start with Small, Strategic Wins: Identify pilot projects for controlled AI implementation. Gather data, iterate solutions, and build success stories to scale.
  • Celebrate Every Milestone: Acknowledge and celebrate even small wins to boost morale and maintain the momentum needed for this long-term journey.
  • Foster an ‘Always Learning’ Mindset: The AI landscape will continue to evolve. Remain agile, stay informed and embrace the spirit of continuous learning.

Let’s Embrace the Journey

The implementation of AI within K-12 education is a long-term endeavor akin to a marathon. It necessitates a strategic and thoughtful approach that prioritizes human-centered principles. By embracing this approach, we have the potential to leverage AI’s transformative abilities and revolutionize our educational institutions for the better. While it may not be as swift as a sprint, the rewards we reap from this journey will be immeasurable and will have a lasting impact on generations to come.
