Over the past 48 hours, many Spaniards have taken to Twitter to voice their concerns and anger over the suspension of the proceedings launched earlier this year against the former king of Spain Juan Carlos I. These proceedings have been launched after it has been publicly alleged, earlier this year, that the king had been at the centre of a tax fraud and money laundering scandal of an unprecedented scale.

While the reasons for which the Spanish people want and deserve this affair clarified are obvious, some journalists, including Ana Romero Galan, have fiercely backed the suspension of the investigation on the king Juan Carlos. Ana Romero, for instance, has regularly backed the king on social media and television since the beginning of the scandal without justifying her position.

This journalist, married to a British diplomat previously suspected of being a spy, has changed sides over the years in favour of and against the king in an unexpected way. Whether her many recent televisions interventions are motivated by a personal vendetta or vested interests, the question of her motives and involvement in this affair need to be clarified.

The stance taken by Spanish journalists and politicians in favour of former king Juan Carlos of Spain is a huge blow to the principles of fair and equal treatment before the law.

What remains to be seen, is how, in the coming weeks, are those journalists going to justify their backing of legal privileges being granted to a king whose years of reign have been marred by scandals.
