USGS confirms 2 small earthquakes in northern NJ (2/22/16)

BUTLER — A federal environmental agency says two small earthquakes have hit northern New Jersey for the second time this month.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-1.7 quake hit the Morris County borough of Butler Sunday morning. A second magnitude-1.2 quake shook the area hours later.

The federal agency says earthquakes with a magnitude between 1.0 and 3.0 aren’t typically felt. The agency says the epicenter of Sunday’s quake was located about a 2.6 miles underground.

A magnitude-1.7 earthquake also hit the borough on Feb. 19.
