There are many different paths available to lawyers once they graduate from law school. Many of those who attended schools such as Harvard or Yale seek out jobs in so-called “big law”, which is a term designating law firms with at least 100 attorneys on staff. These firms pay high salaries to entice the best graduates, but at the same time it is a demanding career with long hours and little choice over what kind of cases you take. The enjoyment factor of big law really depends on the type of person you are. It’s been described as tedious and dull work, but on the other hand if you are the type of person who enjoys detail oriented work then you might find it an enjoyable career path.
One of the more popular options for attorneys, especially those who have spent a few years working in big law, is to seek out a position as an in-house counsel for a corporation. Corporate counselors provide the same sort of services that large law firms do, but they have become more popular over the years as companies seek to keep their legal needs in-house. This option provides a steady job and a decent paycheck and, usually, a bit more flexible hours than working in a big law firm.

Another career path is to simply find work for a smaller firm that specializes in your practice area. These firms are sometimes called boutique firms. Whereas large law firms offer a wide variety of legal services to their clients, so-called boutique firms usually on specialize in a specific area of the law. Due to their smaller size, they often give multiple tasks to each attorney. This makes them a great way to earn experience in your career.

A lot of attorneys who enjoy public service often pursue careers working for the District Attorney or Public Defender’s office. Those who obtain these jobs will assist in the prosecution or defense of accused criminals at trial. While these jobs often don’t pay a whole lot there are several benefits to them in addition to the satisfaction of public service. Some of these include the standard insurance packages as well as student-loan forgiveness after a certain number of years.

Andrew R. Crumbie chose to start his own law firm and it has grown to be one of the most successful boutique firms in Connecticut. The Crumbie Law Group specializes in business law and currently has eight attorneys on staff.
