For over 4 years, we have been dedicatedly working on the development and improvement of our mobile application, SuperMama. Designed for iOS and Android platforms, SuperMama serves as a comprehensive newborn diary app that helps parents track their baby’s growth and milestones. With a subscription-based model, we have successfully achieved a monthly recurring revenue (MRR) of $15,000. As we gear up for the upcoming release, which includes the integration of a chat feature, we believe it is essential to outline the underlying motivations that guided our decision-making process. By documenting our assumptions and evaluating the outcomes, we hope to offer valuable insights to other projects while accurately assessing our own results.

1.Problem-Oriented Technology

In one of our previous startup ventures, we developed a blockchain wallet with a stablecoin, neglecting the fundamental principle of addressing a specific problem. This led to a significant expenditure of resources — financial, temporal, and human — resulting in a product that ultimately failed to gain traction. However, the technology itself possessed immense potential. With SuperMama, we have taken a different approach. We have actively observed and responded to confirmed user demands, evident through requests, interviews, previously implemented features, and comprehensive analytics. This user-centric perspective has provided us with a solid foundation for integrating chat functionality.

2. Integration Simplicity

As a relatively small, distributed team, the simplicity of integrating new features is of paramount importance to us. We aimed to select a chat solution that seamlessly integrates into our existing infrastructure and workflow without causing undue complexity or disruptions. By prioritizing simplicity, we can allocate our resources effectively and ensure a smooth implementation process.

3. User Value and Our Efforts

Understanding the limitations of our resources, it became apparent that we could not adequately satisfy all user requests for additional content or develop our proprietary artificial intelligence. However, by incorporating a chat assistant powered by GPT, we can offer valuable insights and support to our users beyond what our in-house capabilities allow. This enhancement provides a tangible and practical value to our users, enhancing their overall experience with SuperMama.

4. MVP Features and Result Evaluation

To assess the success of the chat integration, we have initially implemented a minimally viable version of the chat feature. This stripped-down version serves as a testing ground, allowing us to gauge user feedback, engagement, and satisfaction. Based on positive results and user validation, we plan to iteratively expand the functionality and evolve the chat assistant into a full-fledged and indispensable tool for our users.

5. Audience and Product Knowledge

Throughout our extensive journey of over 4 years, we have diligently studied and familiarized ourselves with our target audience. We possess a deep understanding of the challenges and concerns faced by young parents, enabling us to tailor SuperMama to their specific needs. This profound knowledge of our audience and product has guided us in choosing the most appropriate technological solutions to meet their requirements effectively.

6. Assistant for Everything — Reid Hoffman, LinkedIn

The concept of an assistant powered by artificial intelligence has been widely embraced by successful products across various industries. We believe in the power of such an assistant to complement and enhance the core functionalities of SuperMama. Just as developers, designers, and copywriters have harnessed the capabilities of AI, our target audience of young parents can greatly benefit from the assistance and guidance provided by our chat assistant.

7. Market Differentiation

SuperMama has established itself as a top niche product in the market, currently ranking among the top three in its category. We have fostered a highly loyal user base, as evidenced by our impressive Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 87.5. However, despite our strong brand reputation and user satisfaction, our revenue still lags behind that of the market leader. As a non venture-funded project, we acknowledge that competing solely on budgetary grounds is not feasible. Hence, we leverage product differentiation as our competitive edge, continuously striving to offer a unique and valuable proposition that distinguishes us from the competition.

8. Product Differentiation

While we may not be able to sell a newborn diary subscription for $150 per year, we can provide an assistant feature that leverages the data collected by SuperMama to help parents make informed decisions regarding their child’s growth and development. Our chat assistant offers advice on various aspects, including sleep patterns and illness management. We firmly believe that the value derived from safeguarding a child’s health, as well as the peace of mind and confidence it brings to young parents, is immeasurable.

9. Blue Ocean Strategy and the Race to the Bottom

Within our niche market, we face a unique challenge in capturing users’ attention due to the narrow focus of our product. The competition from related brands further intensifies the need for differentiation. Competing solely on price is not a viable strategy for us. Instead, our objective is to carve out a distinctive market position by offering superior features, unparalleled user experience, and exceptional customer support, all of which contribute to our competitive advantage.

10. Organic Growth and Community

As we analyze the current market dynamics, it becomes increasingly evident that relying solely on paid user acquisition is not sustainable. Given the rising customer acquisition costs (CAC) in our category and the relatively low lifetime value (LTV) of users, organic growth becomes imperative for survival. Luckily, the community of young parents is highly connected and engaged. By consistently delivering a high-quality product that meets their needs, we aim to foster organic growth and build a passionate community of SuperMama users who actively share their positive experiences.

As we approach the imminent release of the chat integration, we anticipate its successful rollout within the next month. Following the launch, we will dedicate ample time to evaluate the implementation and analyze the results. If you find this topic intriguing, rest assured that I will publish a subsequent article providing a comprehensive overview of the outcomes and valuable insights derived from the release. I invite you to stay tuned for further updates and an in-depth analysis of our progress.
