Like other pieces of technology, video game consoles enjoy tremendous growth from one technological generation to the other. With such pacing, it’s easy for those who are out of the loop to be left confused.

Imagine this: It’s far ahead into the future. You’re successful and are married with kids.

One day, your teenage son comes up to you and said that for his upcoming birthday present, he really, REALLY wants a “PlayStation 10”.

Immediately, several thoughts popped up in your mind, something along these lines:

There’s a PlayStation 10?!”

“…Didn’t PlayStation 5 just got released a while ago?”

“…..When did I get so old?”

But for someone who’s been so out of the loop, the most crucial question would probably be: “How much does it cost?”.

Well, you’re in luck, for this guide got you covered.

We, at IPrice, have compiled the historical and most recent prices of video game consoles in Indonesia, dating back as early to the first PlayStation. We are planning to keep this guide updated far well into the future, so if you like to play video games, or know someone dear who does, we recommend you to keep this page bookmarked!

Let's start with the two latest generations of gaming consoles (8th and 9th generation), comprised of Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PS4 Pro, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and PS5.

The current top 3 highest priced consoles are PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. This is not surprising, considering they are the latest generation of video game consoles.

For those of you looking for the older console generations; maybe out of nostalgia, or maybe you’re an old soul at heart, we got you covered too:

The information from the graphs above stand well on its own, but we could gain further insights by also looking at the historical release prices of these video game consoles. Let's take a trip down the memory lane:

Table 1. Release Price of Video Game Consoles (1995–2022)

Not only does the table infographic contains info about the console prices upon their initial release, but it also provides the inflation-adjusted value to the current year of 2022, which allows us to make an even price comparison for all of the video game consoles. From this, the first set of insights can be obtained:

  • The release price for most home video game consoles is in the IDR 5 Million to 8 Million range, with some exceptions such as PS3, Nintendo Gamecube, and Xbox One.
  • For handheld consoles, the range is notably smaller, between IDR 3 Million to IDR 5 Million.
  • The insights above showed that while the release price of consoles might increase over time, the actual value remains mostly the same. E.g. A console released in 2020 for $499 might seems to be more expensive than a console released in 1995 for $299. But when both values are adjusted for 2022, both prices are equivalent to approximately $550.

This information is useful, as we can use the price range above as a benchmark to assess the prices of upcoming consoles, thus informing us of which consoles are lowly or highly-priced.

In addition, by comparing the release prices in the infographic above (table 1) to the current price of consoles (graph 1 and graph 2), we can obtain our second set of insights:

  • The current market prices for PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S are higher than their release prices in 2020 :
  1. The price for PS5 has increased by 63.4%, from Rp.6.273.628 to Rp.10.250.000 (note: these are for the digital edition of PS5). Even when compared to the official PS5 launch price in Indonesia (Rp.7.299.000), the current market price is still higher by roughly 40%.
  2. The price for Xbox Series S has increased by 55.3%, from Rp.4.700.201 to Rp.7.299.000.
  3. The price for Xbox Series X has increased by 24.9%, from Rp.7.845.908 to Rp.9.799.000.

The increase in price for these consoles is most likely to be caused by their relevancy and rarity. These consoles are the latest generation of video game consoles and are known to be especially hard to get.

Like most items, the console prices will decrease as time goes on, but so does their relevancy. New editions/variants will most likely to be released by the time the price has dropped into a comfortable range.

Ultimately, it all depends on what you, as the customer, want to experience, and how much you’re willing to pay for it. You can use our tools at IPrice to keep a check on the market without having to do the rigorous process of checking one price after another at individual e-commerce sites.

Whether you’re someone who’s looking for the latest, most cutting-edge gaming console or casually looking for a platform to play, we hope this guide can help you make informed decisions that best fit your needs.
