“this is supposed to be the industry undoing (or “disrupting”) the staid, backward-thinking business practices of the past” — this assumption is where the author is fundamentally mistaken. I don’t know where it comes from but the idea that the tech industry — comprised of the same human beings as any other industry — should be somehow more enlightened with regards to workplace ethics and morals because it’s ostensibly comprised of “brighter” minds or because it looks towards the future of mankind? That’s an extremely naive premise to make.

Silicon Valley is no different, and should not be treated any different, than any other industry when it comes to things like ethics and morals — there’s no room for surprise whatsoever.
